After enduring a disappointing night in the recent Merseyside Derby, Liverpool will hope to get back on track quickly on Wednesday evening as the champions-elect host a well-marshaled Crystal Palace side who still have designs on a place in Europe next season.
Manchester City’s 5-0 demolition of Burnley saw them close the gap on the runaway league leaders, but it is only a matter of when not if Jurgen Klopp’s men cross the finishing line and a Wednesday night win will put them on the brink of a first league crown in 30 years.
FLAWLESS LIVERPOOL HOME RECORD HARD TO IGNORE
Liverpool are unbeaten in the league at home this campaign and in fact have a 100% win record at Anfield where they have conceded only 15 goals all season as hosts. The Reds have also scored 55 goals over the same period.
Crystal Palace won their last two matches on the road, latterly beating Bournemouth 2-0 on their first outing since the restart. However the Eagles have won only nine matches this season on the road, losing six and drawing five games which includes three of their last six matches.
26 goals conceded away from home is the third-best defensive away record in the English Premier League, while the Eagles are also finding the net regularly with 26 goals scored . They also know how to score against Liverpool and have notched up at least one goal in four of their last six clashes with Jurgen Klopp’s champions elect although they have ultimately met with defeat each time.
PALACE ARRIVING IN FORM
Roy Hodgson’s well-drilled visitors will be no pushover and arrive in good heart having won their last four games which includes two on the road. They are also the last side to beat Liverpool at Anfield in a league match so Klopp’s stars will know they face a battle for the three points.
In racking up those four wins Palace have also shut out the opposition each time, while they have only been beaten three times in their last 12 away games since October. They are one of the best counter-attacking sides in the Premier League, capable of soaking up pressure and hitting on the break so Liverpool will have to be cautious of their threat.
The Reds have beaten palace in their last six clashes, but none of those wins have come easily and both teams have scored in four of those six games. However with European participation still a possibility, Hodgson will be sure to have his team fired up and they’ll push Liverpool hard.
BOTH SIDES AT NEAR FULL-STRENGTH
Liverpool could welcome back defender Andrew Robertson for the match although Joel Matip will miss the action having been injured in the 0-0 draw at Goodison Park. Mohamed Salah is likely to retake his place in the Liverpool attack having been on the bench in the Merseyside Derby.
Roy Hodgson meanwhile almost has a full squad to choose from aside from youngster Martin Kelly and the versatile Jeffrey Schlupp who is out for the rest of the campaign. The match will come too soon for the returning James Tomkins who continues to battle back to fitness.
Both teams however should be at nearly full strength for Wednesday evening’s clash.
It is easy to forgive Liverpool’s lack of sharpness in the Merseyside Derby; but Crystal Palace hit the ground running with their defeat of Bournemouth and will prove no pushover for Jurgen Klopp’s men as they inch towards the Premier League title.
Palace’s formidable defensive record away from home will be tested to the full by the home side’s potent attacking force; yet most teams have found it difficult to score against the visitors who are very adept at soaking up opponents’ pressure and quickly turning defence into attack.
Both teams have a habit of scoring against each other and our Wednesday night soccer betting tips expect that trend to continue although in a cagey match Liverpool may just gain the upper hand again and take a big step towards the title with a narrow victory.
