It’s been an inauspicious start to the Russell Wilson era in Denver, as the nine-time Pro Bowler has led the Broncos to their sixth consecutive losing season in 2022.
The 4-10 Broncos have skidded their way from preseason Super Bowl contenders in Colorado sports betting to being eliminated from playoff contention with three games left. And now Denver moves into a tie with the New York Jets on the NFL’s least enviable list.

Broncos Went Bust in Year 1 of Wilson Era
It’s safe to say the honeymoon period for first-year Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett was short lived, as Denver fell at home to Wilson’s old team (Seattle), 17-16, after Hackett tried (and missed) a 64-yard field goal attempt in the game’s final seconds.
Denver never recovered its mojo, losing five of seven out of the gate, including four consecutive games (against Las Vegas, Indianapolis, the L.A. Chargers, and Jets), before finally getting back in the win column against Jacksonville.
That victory was merely a temporary salve, however, as the Broncos lost their next five games to fall to 3-10, crashing out of the NFL playoff chase entirely.
Much of the blame for the Broncos fate can be placed on the right shoulder of Wilson, who is having his worst statistical season.
The former NC State and Wisconsin signal-caller has put up the lowest QBR (37.1), yards per completion (7.1), and completion percentage (60.4%) of his career — while the mobility that made Wilson a household name has gone out the window in Denver.
The 11th-year QB has rushed for 215 yards and a single touchdown, which ranks as the second lowest yearly total (behind 2021) and lowest touchdown total of his storied playing career.
Who Else Has Climbed the NFL’s Losing List
The other climbers (if you can call them that) on the NFL’s losing season streak list in 2022 are the NFC South’s Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons, along with the Chicago Bears.
The Panthers and Falcons extended their run of .500 or worse seasons to five in 2022, as they both sit at 5-9 this year, while the Bears notched their fourth straight non-winning season by going 3-11.
Washington is on the fence of posting a sixth straight non-winning season, with a 7-6-1 record for the year after Sunday night’s loss to the Giants.
The other NFL franchises that have put forth four straight non-winning seasons are the Detroit Lions and Jacksonville Jaguars, who have gone 7-7 and 6-8 this year and have legitimate chances to break that streak.
