What started with a single sports betting shop in the German city of Karlsruhe has expanded into a wagering operation active in seven countries. And now, it’s on the brink of going live in Ohio.
Tipico, which bills itself as the home of sports betting in its native Germany, is among the sportsbooks that have received conditional approval to launch in Ohio. Of course, it will wait until the state’s sports betting industry kicks off on Jan. 1. The book has received an OK from the Ohio Casino Control Commission to launch mobile and retail operations in partnership with the Columbus Crew. The MLS club plans to debut a 4,800-square-foot Tipico Sportsbook Club within its home stadium.
As part of Tipico’s launch in Ohio, the sportsbook offers new users a $250 bonus. Customers who download the app, create an account with Tipico Ohio and deposit $50 or more can claim $250 in bonus funds. The bonus applies to parlays, which will be added to a user’s account on Jan. 1 by 11:59 p.m. The bonus funds expire 14 days from the date of credit and must be played through three times before they can be withdrawn.

Before Funding New Ohio Bettors $250: The History of Tipico & Pro Soccer
Initially developed by three students in the late 1990s, Tipico introduced its first website in 2005. Four years later, it saw its network of betting shops increase to 500. Eventually, it became the sports betting market leader in Germany. One of every two sports wagers in Germany is placed through Tipico.
The company’s U.S. presence was established in New Jersey in 2019 when it set up its American headquarters in Hoboken. The sportsbook later debuted operations in Colorado and secured market access in Iowa and Indiana through an agreement with Caesars Entertainment. However, its sports betting app has yet to debut in those two states. Ohio, on Jan. 1, will mark the third U.S. state in which Tipico will begin operations.
And the Columbus Crew proved a natural partner, given Tipico’s longstanding relationship with soccer. Its first brand ambassador was Oliver Kahn, a legendary goalkeeper who led Germany to the World Cup final in 2002. Tipico became an official partner of European soccer power Bayern Munich in 2015. It partnered with the German Bundesliga in 2018. The Tipico Sportsbook Club will debut in Columbus when the Crew kicks off its 2023 home schedule on March 4.

Tipico Putting Down Ohio Roots
The $250 parlay offer is one of three pre-registration promotions Ohio residents can choose from. Tipico is also offering $150 in free bets split into six $25 wagers or a 150% deposit match up to $150 with a deposit of $10 or more. Both require deposits of at least $10. All three promotional offers require bettors to be at least 21 years old and physically present within Ohio.
Tipico is also establishing roots in Ohio beyond sports. Earlier this month, the company announced a multi-year agreement in which Tipico will become presenting sponsor of AEG Presents’ “Best Bet Concert Series,” a series of 32 musical performances to take place at Columbus music venues. Hosts include KEMBA Live!, Newport Music Hall, A&R Music Bar, The Basement, and the Agora Theatre and Ballroom in Cleveland.
Tipico was among 21 mobile sportsbook operators conditionally approved by the Ohio Casino Commission as of its most recent report issued Dec. 14. The state’s Jan. 1 launch will represent the most significant expansion of gaming in the history of Ohio—which experts believe could blossom into a $3.5 billion sports betting market—and the largest ever simultaneous launch of sports betting in the United States.
And it promises to start with a bang, given that Jan. 1 is an NFL Sunday.
