Baltimore Orioles at Philadelphia Phillies, Wed 9/22 >>
This Phillies/Orioles game shouldn’t be particularly close. Philly has won five of seven games as they try to make one last playoff push, while the Orioles have consistently been one of the league’s worst teams all season.
Making matters worse for Baltimore, they’ll have Keegan Akin on the mound here. Akin has been one of MLB’s worst starting pitchers, and the only reason he’s still in the rotation is because the Orioles simply have nothing to lose. He enters with an eye-popping 6.93 ERA through 23 appearances and 16 starts. I don’t see him faring too well against Bryce Harper, who has a ridiculous 1.254 OPS in September.
Conversely, the Phillies will start Zack Wheeler, who is in the middle of a career year. Wheeler has looked like a legit ace, and he’s got a 2.83 ERA. Over his last three outings, Wheeler has given up only two total runs. Philadelphia has won each of those three games, by a combined score of 22-3.
The Orioles have scored three runs or fewer in seven of their past eight contests, so Wheeler should cruise here. Baltimore is just playing out the string, while the Phillies are still locked in a tight playoff race.
