Team History

The Seattle Seahawks began playing for the NFL in 1976. Jack Patera, former assistant coach for Minnesota, became the Seahawks’ Head Coach. The team moved to the American Football Conference (AFC) in 1977 from the National Football Conference (NFC). 1978 was the team’s first winning season, which also earned Jack Patera Coach of the Year.

In 1982, Patera was removed as the coach of the Seahawks, with Mike McCormack finishing the season as a temporary head coach. Chuck Knox became the team’s official Head Coach in 1983, leading the team 83-67-0 record up to 1991.
