Team history

A young Lamar Hunt in 1959, 26-year-old at the time decided to embark on an alternate route that would give the pro football a new look. He founded the American Football League that season and became the league’s first president with eight new teams in the competition in 1960. Dallas Texans as it was known at the time were directly in competition with Dallas Cowboys who were the NFL’S newest team. This did not deter the Texans who went on to the AFL championship with a 20-17 win over Houston Oilers thereby establishing themselves as one of the league’s new top teams.

A successful team, the Chiefs have gone on to win three AFL championships in 1962, 1966 and 1969, also becoming the only team after the New York Jets to dispatch an NFL team in an AFL-NFL World Championship Game after defeating the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV.
