BetMGM announced a partnership with the Washington Nationals that secured market access in the District of Columbia five months ago. As a result, bettors in the jurisdiction have patiently waited for the sportsbook to launch, and they will finally be able to utilize the mobile platform.
BetMGM Goes Live
MGM Resorts International announced on Thursday that the mobile sportsbook was live in Washington D.C. The app is mobile, but it’s not universally available throughout the district because of the gambling laws in the jurisdiction.
The app can only be used within a two-block radius of Nationals Park. This is still beneficial for bettors looking to wager from the stadium. Also, the Nationals are looking to capitalize on retail betting per their deal with BetMGM.
The franchise will be constructing a retail sportsbook connected to the ballpark later in 2021. The Nationals are not the only MLB team that is attempting to combine legal betting and baseball.
The Chicago Cubs have announced a plan to operate with DraftKings for retail sports betting. These partnerships are expected to develop over the coming seasons as legal betting continues to expand.
Alan Gottlieb, COO of Nationals owner Lerner Sports Group, was ecstatic about BetMGM launching and the future retail sportsbook at the stadium.
“The BetMGM mobile app will enable our fans to engage with the game in new and exciting ways, while the BetMGM sportsbook connected to Nationals Park will provide Nationals fans and the D.C. community with a first-class gathering place to celebrate their passion for sports,” said Gottlieb.
Watch Out GambetDC
The Washington D.C. lottery runs sports betting in the jurisdiction. The lottery has a contract with Intralot to offer online wagering throughout the district through GambetDC. The only benefit of GambetDC is that it’s universally available.
However, the app has tons of flaws in its technology, and the markets are limited. The lottery does allow other businesses to seek sports betting partnerships, but the laws are more constricting.
Last summer, William Hill opened a sportsbook thanks to a partnership with Capital One Arena. The William Hill-Capital One Arena partnership is the same as the deal between BetMGM and the Washington Nationals. The William Hill app can only be used within two miles of the arena.
Despite GambetDC controlling more ground in the jurisdiction, William Hill has dominated the market. The addition of BetMGM will only hurt GambetDC because of a new reputable book joining the market.
In April, William Hill collected $8 million in wagers compared to GambetDC’s $2.7 million handle. This gap should not be as comprehensive, considering GambetDC can operate throughout the district.
William Hill’s handle turned into $1.6 million in gross revenue. This was nearly three times as much as GambetDC’s $535,772 total. GambetDC will need to offer better lines to attract bettors with BetMGM joining William Hill in Washington.
With BetMGM launching in the jurisdiction, they now control the DMV, which is D.C, Maryland, and Virginia. The site has launched in Virginia and D.C., and the company has secured market access in Maryland, where the book should launch later this year.
