The first Friday Night Soccer of the restarted Premier League takes in what promises to be a cracking match with hosts Tottenham taking on a resurgent Manchester United at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Jose Mourinho, no stranger to the Old Trafford side, will lock horns with his old side managed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a crucial three points at stake for both teams in their race for a place in Europe next season.
TOP STARS RETURN FOR HOME SIDE
Jose Mourinho will be able to call upon both Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min for Friday’s feature match with both having been missing through injury and suspension prior to the lockdown. They were sorely missed as Tottenham went on a dismal run of six games without a win in all competitons.
To be fair, they hadn’t been at their best prior and were knocked out of both the Champions League and the FA Cup and their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League has taken a big hit.
Manchester United meanwhile have ridden their own wave of poor form and had been playing well prior to the shutdown where the Red Devils racked up an eleven-game unbeaten streak in all competitions to climb the table and now sit fifth in the Premier League table – the last automatic qualification spot for the Champions League.
During that run they posted impressive defeat of both Chelsea and city rivals Manchester City, beating the latter on their final game prior to the season being put on the back-burner. It is perhaps no coincidence that big-money January signing Bruno Fernandes has been the catalyst for United’s improvement in form while they too will be boosted by the potential return of Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba.
ACTION AT BOTH ENDS
Tottenham have only managed to keep out the opposition in six of their last twenty games in the Premier League, but on most occasions they’ve limited their rivals to only one goal when their defence has been breached. They have also managed to score at least once in the majority of their home games this season.
Manchester United meanwhile for all they’ve been in good form continue to ship away goals on their travels and the visitors have only managed to prevent the home side scoring on three occasions from their last 20 away matches. Over the same stretch of games they have failed to hit the net in eight of those matches.
Half of Tottenham’s last twenty matches have seen both teams scoring; while it is a similar story with Manchester United’s away record and backing both teams to score in Friday Night’s feature game looks a solid bet.
There’s also been plenty of goals in each side’s last twenty matches with an average of almost three goals per game.
UNITED SHADE HEAD-TO-HEAD ENCOUNTERS
The last ten encounters between these two sides in all competitions sees Manchester United shading the series with six wins, while Tottenham have registered four against the visitors with no draws. However Manchester United don’t have the best record against the home side when playing away from home and they’ve only won two of those games at Spurs’ ground.
This is likely to be a close game and the result is difficult to call. However if Manchester United can pick up the sort of form they showed prior to the enforced Covid-19 shutdown then they can take all three points and consolidate their chances of a Champions League spot next season.
Goals are expected at both ends in what could be a high-scoring game; both teams are likely to find the net at least once in the game.
