Bayer Leverkusen are chasing a spot in European competition next term and Sunday’s featured game in the Bundesliga sees Peter Bosz’ side travel to the VELTINS-Arena to take on struggling Schalke 04.
The home team are fighting to hold on to their top-half of the table status having guaranteed survival from relegation although Schalke 04 have been underperforming since the restart of the Bundesliga follwing the coronavirus pandemic and points have been thin on the ground in recent weeks to heap pressure on manager David Wagner.
Schalke 04 come into the game having lost four of their last six matches although they halted their pointless spell by taking a point in their last match away to Union Berlin with a hard-fought 1-1 draw.
Meanwhile Bayer Leverkusen have won four of their last six matches including securing their place in the German Cup final in midweek although they have lost two of their last three matches in the Bundesliga.
The away side were swept aside by rampant leaders Bayern Munich in their last Bundesliga game having earlier suffered a surprise defeat to Wolfsburg; both those reversals came at home but their form away from the BayArena has been much better with wins in their last three matches on their travels.
Away side know the route to goal
Bayern have also been prodigious in front of goal away from home, scoring 13 goals in their last six matches and have won four of those six; they’ve found the net also at least once in each of those games.
Schalke 04 however have defensive problems and haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last five starts where they’ve conceded eleven goals in that stretch while only scoring two in response. Those frailties would suggest that they might struggle to keep out the strong attacking threat of the visitors.
The home side may well be buoyed by taking a point in their last term to halt their run of poor form; but they have to back it up against a team who will likely be confident of securing all three points following their midweek success and still chasing an automatic qualification spot in next campaign’s Champions League.
The away side will be keen to avoid any mishaps as they still have some work to do to cement their standing towards the top of the table; but they are likely to hold too many guns for the home side who have struggled at both ends of the pitch this term and the visitors should come away with the win.
Bet 1: Back Bayer Leverkusen -1 goal to win the match.
