In a hope to embrace the potential revenue stream that legalized sports betting could bring to the state, the first steps have been made in Virginia to make legalized sports betting available. Three of the state’s lawmakers are planning to introduce three separate sports betting bills that could open the doors for the legalization of sports betting during the new legislative session set to start in January.
Gambling in Virginia is currently illegal, and historically state lawmakers have rejected efforts in the legalization of any form of gambling. However, this changed when the state Legislature allowed the addition of betting on horse races at the state racetracks earlier in 2018.
The state is also seeing the effects of residents being able to travel to neighboring states such as Maryland to play in casinos as well as West Virginia, which now offers sports betting. The three lawmakers are hoping that by promoting the legalization of sports betting they can keep the gambling dollars in the state.
Although the concept of sports betting itself is expected to go thru, the idea of sports wagering in the state is still going to require many details to be worked out for all to be on board.
