History was made earlier this week in Washington D.C. when the William Hill Sportsbook officially opened inside of Capital One Arena. A temporary location had been established, but this now becomes the first sportsbook in a professional sports stadium in the United States.
Capital One Arena is home to the Washington Capitals and Wizards, two teams owned by Ted Leonsis. Leonsis was able to secure a partnership with William Hill, and retail sports betting was available this weekend for a home Wizards playoff game.
Leonsis had this to say on the day of the ribbon cutting ceremony, “This is the first step in the reinvention of the role arenas play in the community, in the city, and how we can get closer to our customers.”
William Hill is one of the biggest names in the US sports betting industry, but it is also a name that will no longer be around soon. Caesars Entertainment has acquired William Hill, and all of the sportsbooks will be rebranded moving forward.
The Washington D.C. sports betting industry has really struggled to take off since launching in 2020, but new retail options will help. Gambet DC is the online sports betting option, and it is one that has come with numerous issues.
This William Hill Sportsbook might be the first of its kind in the United States, but it won’t be the last. In fact, Nationals Park in Washington D.C. should have one open this summer. BetMGM has partnered with the Nationals, and that stadium is close to opening that sportsbook.
Professional sports teams and league continue to support the legalizing of sports betting, but they want in on the action. Similar deals have already been reached, and construction on similar sportsbooks is taking place throughout the US.
June will be the first full month of retail betting at the new sportsbook, and those figures will likely show how successful of a venture it will be.
Details of the Sportsbook
The most important aspect of the new William Hill Sportsbook at Capital One Arena is that it will be open year round. The biggest days are expected during Capitals and Wizards home games, but it should quickly turn into the top sports betting option in D.C.
The new sportsbook spans more than 18,000 square feet and takes up two stories inside of the arena. Along with having 17 betting windows open, there will also be 12 self-service kiosks.
William Hill is committed to delivering an exceptional game day experience for Capitals and Wizards fans, and that includes when the teams are on the road.
There are more than 100 televisions inside of the new sportsbook, and odds will be displayed on a 1,500 square foot LED board that wraps around the property. A full food and drink menu will be available anytime that the sportsbook is open.
Live radio and television shows will be produced from the studio booth that is set up inside of the sportsbook. Even though this is the first of its kind in the US, William Hill is setting a pretty high standard.
