Home > What Can Customers Expect When Ohio Sports Betting Goes Live Jan. 1

In just three days, the ball will drop in Times Square in New York City, and Ohio will become the 32nd state to offer legal sports wagering.

On Jan. 1, at 12:01 a.m., Ohio sports betting will begin one of the biggest rollouts in the country as one of just 13 states to have teams in each of the four major sports leagues (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL) along with a pair of Major League Soccer franchises and several Division I collegiate programs.

Here’s what to expect when Ohio rolls out legal sports betting on New Year’s Day.

For starters, some of the most well-known sports betting apps will instantly become available for wagers on New Year’s Day, including Barstool Sportsbook Ohio, FanDuel Sportsbook Ohio, DraftKings, PointsBet, Caesars and Betfred, among plenty of others.

Overall, there will be over two dozen legal sportsbooks available for Ohio bettors on Jan. 1.

Many of these sports betting apps have pre-launch promotional offers sports bettors can take advantage of (if they haven’t done so already), but time is running out with launch day fast approaching.

Retail Locations Opening Across State

Of course, online is not the only option for the Ohio sports bettor when the calendar flips to 2023.

There are a dozen retail, brick-and-mortar locations ready to open their doors with celebrations planned for Jan. 1.

In Cincinnati, Major League Baseball’s hit king Pete Rose is set to make the first wager at the new Hard Rock Sportsbook at Hard Rock Casino. Less than a mile south, BetMGM Sportsbook is opening at Great American Ball Park, the home of the Cincinnati Reds.

Superbook Sports is opening a retail sportsbook at FC Cincinnati’s TQL Stadium.

Belterra Park Cincinnati will operate a FanDuel Sportsbook, and Barstool Sportsbook is set to have four retail locations across the state: Hollywood Casino Columbus, Hollywood Casino Toledo, Hollywood Gaming at Dayton Raceway and Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley.

BetJack will have a pair of retail locations in the Greater Cleveland area at JACK Cleveland Casino and JACK Thisledown Racino (North Randall, Ohio) with each location hosting a New Year’s Eve countdown party. Elsewhere in Cleveland, BetMGM Sportsbook and Lounge at MGM Northfield Park is set to open.

Most Kiosks Not Ready for Jan. 1

The Ohio Casino Control Commission has approved over 1,000 Type-C licenses for sports-betting kiosks to be offered at businesses with either a D-1, D-2 or D-5 liquor license. Those businesses include grocery stores, restaurants, bars and retailers that sell Ohio Lottery Tickets. The kiosks will offer just four types of wagers: spread, moneyline, parlays and over-under.

However, the majority of these kiosks, which will be available for smaller wagers, won’t be operational until later in the year.

Kroger, one of the most popular grocery stores in Ohio, received licenses for sports-betting kiosks in over 40 of its nearly 200 locations in the Buckeye State. However, the Cincinnati Business Courier reported through a Kroger spokesperson that those kiosks won’t be operational until later in the year.

Giant Eagle, which has 65 licenses, will also not have their sports-betting kiosks up and running on New Year’s Day.

Launching Early Shot Down

The timing of the rollout for Ohio sports betting is just a few hours late for some football fans.

Ohio State is scheduled to take on No. 1 Georgia as a 6.5-point underdog in the Peach Bowl on Dec. 31. It’s the first round of the College Football Playoff, and the contest kicks off at 8 p.m., just a few hours before the statewide sports-betting launch.

Ohio Casino Control Commission Director of Communications Jessica Franks said the OCCC received questions regarding the potential of moving the launch date up, but Jan. 1 remains the day.

“While the Commission received inquiries regarding a change to the launch of sports gaming, in order to keep the start date universal for those looking to launch as required by law, sports gaming in Ohio will begin on Jan. 1, 2023,” Franks said.

However, Ohio sports bettors could wager on the game legally if they were already signed up to one of the many available sports betting apps and the game were to go to overtime. When 12:01 a.m. rolls around, those apps will go live and an in-game wager on Ohio State-Georgia could be available if regulation can’t decide a victor.

What Can Ohioans Bet On?

Despite the high likelihood Ohio residents will miss out on Ohio State-Georgia, there will be plenty of actionable games across numerous sports on New Year’s Day.

For starters, there are 14 NFL games scheduled for Jan. 1. That includes the Cleveland Browns, who are currently 2.5-point underdogs in their New Year’s Day road affair against the Washington Commanders. The total (over-under) is set at 40.5 points.

On Jan. 2, the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills meet at Paycor Stadium for a Monday Night Football clash full of playoff implications. The Bengals are currently 1-point underdogs and the total is set at 49.5.

Also on Jan. 2, there are four College Football Bowl games, including the Rose Bowl between Penn State and Utah and the Cotton Bowl between USC and Tulane.

If Ohio State were to upset the top-ranked Bulldogs, bettors would be able to back the buckeyes in the College Football National Championship on Jan. 9 against either Michigan or TCU.

There are three NBA games on Jan. 1 and 11 the following day, including the first Cleveland Cavaliers game that Ohio bettors will be able to wager on when the Cavs host the Chicago Bulls.
