Sports Betting Regulations Draft Accepted in Maryland

The DMV (D.C., Maryland, and Virginia) is on its way to becoming a sports betting region to keep an eye on: D.C. and Virginia have launched sports betting, and Maryland is on the verge of launching. This is an exciting time for the region and United States legal sports betting industry as a whole as wagering continues to sweep the nation.

On Thursday, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission unanimously approved a draft of the state’s sports betting regulations. The rules dealt with betting operation in the state and licensing, and they were passed through a teleconference.

The document was 228 pages in length, and it laid out the framework for sports betting in Maryland.

Comment period

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission passing the rules draft was the next step for legal sports betting in Maryland. The state has the goal to launch sports betting during football season. This is realistic, but there is an arduous process that still lies ahead for wagering.

The public will have the opportunity to submit comments regarding the rules at a later date. The comment submission will be open for 30 days, giving residents plenty of time to make suggestions. The commission has not announced the beginning date for the comment period.

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission will notify the public on its website. The regulations will not be easy to sift through because the pages are filled with critical information for sports betting in the state.

The regulations deal with fees, betting equipment, customer exclusion, and a variety of other topics. They were prepared by commission members over an extended period. The rumor in Maryland is that it could be challenging to secure market access.

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission will examine applicants closely to see if they would be a good fit to offer wagering.

However, many businesses have the opportunity to seek licensure in Maryland. The goal for the legislature was to use sports betting to help struggling businesses. The extensive regulations could deter businesses from applying with the pandemic coming to an end.

Unique look

Maryland has strict sports betting rules because applicants can apply for licensure from a variety of businesses. The state’s betting framework is unique and different from every state in America. Maryland’s framework could create a trend for the states that have not legalized sports wagering.

Mobile betting will be allowed in the state, but there will be dozens of retail sportsbooks throughout Maryland. Casinos will open books, but mom and pop shops will also have an opportunity to participate in the industry.

The businesses that are expected to apply for Maryland sports betting are OTBs, bingo halls, and sports bars. The Maryland legislature had the goal to get minority and female-owned businesses involved in sports betting.

From professional sports teams to restaurants, all applicants must start the licensure process with the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission. They will be emphasizing minority and female-owned businesses first. After this body approves applications, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission will give the final approval.
