Sports Betting Split in West Virginia Could See Delaware North Lose Online Gaming Race

West Virginia Sports Betting

New laws mean West Virginians now have access to online casino gaming but they may have to wait before they see anything new from Delaware North.

The local casino operator had been quick to embrace the state’s online sports betting revolution. Partnering with Miomni Gaming, the operator ran two live sportsbook, including Wheeling Island (pictured), and the online betting site, BetLucky.

However, after issues with Miomni Gaming, Delaware North has been forced to put a temporary hold on its operations. At the heart of the shutdown is a dispute with fellow sports betting technology supplier Enterg Software Solutions.

Online Sports Betting Offline (For Now)

With a conflict of interest leading to a break down between Miomni and Delaware North, the latter has been forced to find a new partner.

While splits between operators and software suppliers isn’t unheard of, the situation means Delaware North patrons will have to wait before normal service resumes.

Commenting on the situation, West Virginia Lottery director John Myers said that any new partner would need to pass the necessary regulatory checks.

“Delaware North is looking at a variety of options, however it could be months before it can restore the sports wagering operations at Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras,” Myers said.

Until Delaware North finds a new partner, the state’s only online sportsbook will remain offline.

While the immediate effects of this are obvious, there could be wider ramifications for Delaware North.

With an active presence online, the could have been the first brand to take advantage of West Virginia’s new online casino laws.

However, with BetLucky customers in a state of limbo, the company’s first priority will be finding a sports betting partner. In the meantime, other casino brands could take an early lead.

Delaware North May Lose the Online Casino Race

Although there has been no indication as to which operator might be first to market, Penn National could be a frontrunner.

Its Hollywood Casino Charles Town is the largest in the state and it already has a working relationship with William Hill. Even though technical issues have prevented Hollywood Casino from launching an online sportsbook, it was the first venue in West Virginia to offer live betting options.

With that being the case, Penn National could be the best bet to usurp Delaware North’s previous hold on the virtual betting scene in the Mountain State.

For locals, the recent headlines will bring a mixture of emotions. Even though online sports betting is currently on hold, new opportunities are around the corner. However, with licensing procedures being what they are, any online innovations probably won’t appear until sometime in the summer.
