Rhode Island Mobile Sports Betting Sets State Record in January

Rhode Island

Rhode Island mobile sports betting handle set a state record in January, but casino revenue was down by double-digits percentages for both video lottery terminals (VLTs) and table games.

On the sports wagering side, the January overall sports betting handle was $58.6 million, an increase of 6.7% from December ($54.9 million), and up 47.2% from January 2021 ($39.8 million). January’s total was the second-best in state history, behind only the $60.16 million wagered in October 2021.

Online Sports Betting 57% of Rhode Island Total

Online sports betting made up about 57% of the total sports betting handle. That amounted to about $33.5 million, which was an increase of 8.2% over December (about $31 million) and up 53.1% from January 2021 ($21.9 million). The old mark for online sports betting handle was $31.1 million in October 2021, according to numbers posted by the Rhode Island Lottery.

Regarding revenue, the January sports betting take was $5.2 million. This was a quantum leap of 343.9% over December ($1.18 million). It was also up 40.7% from January 2021 ($3.7 million). The month’s revenue was third-best in state history. Only two months exceeded this total, November 2021 and November 2020 where the total exceeded $6 million.

It is worth noting that the huge percentage jump in revenue from December to January was a circumstance shared across the sports betting industry. December was a terrible month for revenue for sportsbooks as the betting public apparently had a banner month. As a result, the January-over-December comparisons have had a particularly bright glow.

Casino Wagering For January Declines

As far as casino play was concerned, the Rhode Island story wasn’t quite as rosy for the house in December.

The January VLT net terminal income of $31.1 million was down 14.4% from December ($36.4 million) but up 15.9% from January 2021 ($26.9 million).

At the tables, the January table game revenue in Rhode Island was $9.1 million, down 11.8% from December ($10.3 million) and up 51.3% from January 2021 (about $6 million).
