Expect Plenty of Points

When looking for over/unders in the NBA, I start by gauging the quality of both the offensive and defensive units.

When averaging out ranks for a few key categories (points per game, effective field goal percentage, and efficiency), I can better understand where each team stands amongst the rest of the league.

This Pelicans-Nets game represents everything that you’d want in an over bet. For starters, Brooklyn has the NBA’s best offense, while New Orleans ranks seventh in the NBA. Both offenses should have their way Wednesday night, considering Brooklyn’s defense is ranked 23rd, and New Orleans’ defense is second-to-last.

It’s the perfect overlap of metrics and a clear sign to bet the over between the Pelicans and the Nets. Expect a high projected total, with both teams two of the best against over/unders this season. Brooklyn is 30-21 against overs. New Orleans is tops in the NBA against totals, at 33-16.

Hedge Your Bet with Player Props

With the total points one of the highest of the year, it can be a smart strategy to diversify your bets with a few player props. Player props are available at most sportsbooks, with betting lines on their individual total points. For sportsbooks available to you, explore the best U.S. betting sites and apps.

Both offenses have the overall advantage over the opposing defenses. Drilling deeper, there are clear players to target for your player props.

Brooklyn Nets

The Nets are fifth in the NBA in three-pointers made, while the Pelicans are the third-most generous defense to the three-point shot. Stark disparities like this suggest plenty of outside opportunities for Brooklyn.

If James Harden is active, he leads the Nets in threes attempted with 7.5 per game. Kyrie Irving is right behind him, with 7.1. The third target to consider would be Joe Harris, shooting nearly 50% from deep.

All three should have plenty of opportunities to score and are worthy of placing an over on their projected point totals.

New Orleans Pelicans

The Pelicans rank third for points in the paint, while the Nets rank 20th against opponents in close. This will be how New Orleans scores their points Wednesday night.

There is no clearer target than Zion Williamson, assuming he suits up as expected. Williamson leads the Pelicans in scoring, with 26.4 per game. The entirety of his work is done down low in the paint. The former first-overall pick should score at will against a susceptible Brooklyn defense.

Recent Performance & Trends

Brooklyn Nets

We may be seeing Kevin Durant’s return on Wednesday night, which would only further jolt this Brooklyn offense and the over pick. Harden left the Nets’ most recent game early, so his status is worth monitoring.

New Orleans Pelicans

Both of the Pelicans’ leading scorers, Williamson and Brandon Ingram, have missed the last week of action. Keep an eye on their status in advance of this game Wednesday. They appear set to return to the lineup this week.
