New Jersey Records Nearly $750 Million in Sports Betting from September

The state of New Jersey has done it again, setting a new sports betting record during September. The sports betting handle in September totaled $748.6 million, smashing the previous record by more than $80 million.

The return of the National Football League was expected to bring a huge boost in betting numbers, but the New Jersey industry continues to raise the bar. The previous record of $668 million was set in New Jersey just last month.

The New Jersey Divison of Gaming Enforcement released these figures on Thursday, and it shows that the industry has completely recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic. The September 2020 betting handle is almost 50 percent higher than it was a year ago at this time.

New Jersey launched sports betting in 2018, and it has not taken the state long to surpass Nevada as the sports betting capital of the US. The highest total ever achieved in Nevada was $614.1 million during November 2019, which was a record at that time.

September is typically a huge month for sports betting as the NFL season kicks things off, but there is reason to believe that New Jersey will continue to set records. Tipico, a German sportsbook, launched on September 29, adding another huge name to an already competitive market.

Mobile Handle Continues to Lead

One of the biggest reasons New Jersey has become the industry leader in sports betting is its large number of mobile sportsbooks. The state allows bettors to create an account remotely, and visitors of the state run into little trouble when trying to place bets.

Mobile sports betting handle in New Jersey during September 2020 was $678.7 million, easily shattering that record as well. In September 2019, the state saw just $374.2 million in the total mobile handle.

Online or mobile sports betting handle accounted for more than 90% of all of the wagers during September. Most of the retail sportsbooks are back open in New Jersey, but bettors continue to prefer to bet online.

Total gaming revenue in New Jersey was actually down almost 1% from August, but it increased by nearly 7% from September 2019.

Other States Posting Large Numbers as Well

Three other states have already released their September sports betting numbers, and the results have been positive throughout the industry. Indiana, Iowa, and West Virginia have all shown tremendous growth over the last month as the return of football has benefitted these states as well.

Indiana posted a sports betting handle of $207.45 million during September, which was an increase of more than 22%. Indiana has become the leader in the Midwest portion of the United States.

West Virginia sports betting handle totaled $76.9 million during September, a 90% increase from August. Iowa saw $72.4 million in handle in September, which was an increase of almost 44 percent.
