MLB Strikes Deal with Betcris

Betcris, an online bookmaker, announced last week that they had reached an agreement with Major League Baseball. The deal will make Betcris an official sports betting partner of MLB, and they will be able to use official league data and logos. This is also the first time that the league has formed a deal with a Latin American operator.

Betcris operates in Latin America, and this region is extremely important to Major League Baseball. Last season, close to 25 percent of all active players were from Latin America, and that number continues to grow.

This deal will also allow Betcris to offer a free-to-play mobile app that should be available before the start of the 2021 season. Betcris has agreed to work closely with the league to keep the integrity of the game intact.

Betcris holds a sports betting license through the Malta Gaming Authority, which means they cannot operate in the United States. The company is based in Costa Rica, and they are considered one of the leaders in the industry in Latin America.

Even though the company does not hold a license in the United States, they did serve customers in the US up until 2007. Single-game sports betting was illegal in every state besides Nevada, but the company operated as an off-shore betting site and was popular in the US.

The 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act chased several off-shore sportsbooks out of the United States as they feared legal action. Betcris directed all of their customers at that time to Bookmaker.eu, and that company is still in operation today.

Betcris Likes Dodgers, Yankees to Win World Series

Betcris is known in Latin American to offer some of the fairest betting lines, and their MLB future odds are very similar to what is being offered in the US. The Latin American company currently has the Los Angeles Dodgers listed at +333, making them the favorites to win the title.

The New York Yankees are the next team on the list, and Betcris has set their betting odds at +355. Betcris has the Houston Astros listed at +945, and they are the only other team listed with single-digit odds.

MLB Looking to Engage Fans

Major League Baseball was directly opposed to all forms of sports betting prior to 2018, but they have changed their stance over the last 24 months. The league continues to lose fans in large numbers, and they are hoping that sports betting will bring back the younger generation.

MLB will work with Betcris to provide unique opportunities in Latin America in hopes of keeping the game popular in that part of the world. MLB has also formed partnerships with seven different sports betting operators in the United States.

DraftKings and FanDuel are two of the biggest sports betting operators that have formed a deal with Major League Baseball, and the list will continue to grow. The league still has some restrictions in place in terms of betting on the game, but they are now working hand in hand with the sports betting industry.
