March will truly be madness for sports fans as Massachusetts sports betting becomes legal in the state Friday — a little more than 48 hours before this year’s NCAA basketball tournament brackets are announced. And sports bettors will hawk the internet for the best March Madness betting promos in 2023.

If you can’t launch before the start of football season, then tipping off less than a week before basketball’s most celebrated event is the next best thing.

Who’s Launching on Friday

Here’s a look at the mobile betting apps that will be taking bets beginning at 10 a.m. Eastern time Friday in Massachusetts.

DraftKings will have a homecourt advantage on launch day, as the company’s 21st state launch will be hitting close to home.

“It was just over 10 years ago when we launched DraftKings from a spare bedroom in Watertown, and now, we are proud to have the opportunity to deliver a safe and legal sports betting product to millions of diehard sports fans across Massachusetts,” said Jason Robins, DraftKings’ co-founder, chief executive officer and chairman, in a news release.

WynnBet could have more traction in Massachusetts than in other places, as its Encore Boston Harbor Casino (which features a WynnBet Sportsbook) had nearly double the casino revenue ($61.8 million) in January than the state’s other two casinos combined (MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park).

BetMGM hopes to draw customers by aligning itself with the Boston Red Sox. The operator and Red Sox announced a partnership deal on Tuesday ahead of Friday’s launch.

“The Red Sox are one of baseball’s most beloved organizations and we’re thrilled to bring BetMGM to their passionate fans,” Matt Prevost, chief revenue officer for BetMGM, said in a news release. “We look forward to working together to elevate the gameday experience in Boston.”

Deals to be had on Launch Day

There will be numerous launch promotions meant to entice new customers to join, as is the case with every state launch.

The best way for a new customer to get an early jump on the action is to use USBettingReport.com to scout those offers. Once you decide which offers and operators are right for you, you can use the operator links on this page to sign up for those kickoff deals.

Don’t be afraid to try multiple operators. It’s a good way to test the apps and find out which one works best for you — while perhaps increasing your bankroll through bonus bets and odds boosts.

BetMGM is featuring $200 in bonus bets for those who register early, while WynnBet is featuring a $50 sports bonus and a $100 credit when you pre-register.

FanDuel is handing out $100 in bonus bets on launch day, as well as offering its “Bet $5, Get $200 in bonus bets” deal to new customers in the state.

Launch Made for March Madness, Frozen Four

Massachusetts’ sports betting law seemed to be crafted specifically for events like the NCAA basketball and hockey tournaments. You can even use the Caesars Sportsbook promo code for college basketball conference tournaments.

Wagers aren’t allowed on state colleges unless they are playing in a tournament with four-or-more teams.

The success of that strategy was seen in February, as the WynnBet Sportsbook retail location took significant action on the famous college hockey Beanpot Tournament.

There figures to be more anticipation from Massachusetts sports fans when the NCAA hockey field is announced March 19 than when the NCAA basketball brackets are rolled out Sunday.

Boston University, Harvard, Merrimack and Northeastern are all ranked in the top 15 in NCAA men’s hockey, while Northeastern and Boston College are top 15 teams on the women’s side.

But Massachusetts college basketball bettors will have at least one local team to back.

Merrimack rallied late to knock off FDU in the Northeast Conference Championship on Tuesday, 67-66, to earn an automatic berth into the NCAA men’s tournament.

UMass Lowell has a chance to follow suit Saturday when it takes on Vermont in the finals of the America East Tournament.
