It has taken 18 months, a public scolding from the governor, and more studies and committee meetings than anyone would care to count. But at very long last, Maryland sports betting goes live – finally. And just in time for a Thanksgiving weekend packed with big events.
The Old Line State flips the switch on legal mobile sports betting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, launching with seven approved sportsbooks: FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, PointsBet, BetRivers and Barstool. Three others, Betfred, BetParx and Fanatics, have received state licenses but were not ready to go live on Maryland’s launch date. Eleven more applicants are still being evaluated by state regulators.
Regardless, the industry’s heavyweights are now live in Maryland in time for a long holiday weekend featuring plenty of sports action of local interest. In college basketball Friday, Maryland hosts Coppin State. In college football Saturday, the Terrapins hosts Rutgers. As for the NFL on Sunday, the Baltimore Ravens are playing in Jacksonville, and the Washington Commanders are hosting the Atlanta Falcons. And soccer-mad Maryland will have plenty of interest in the World Cup. A highlight for sure is the U.S. vs. England match Friday.
So indeed, there’s a lot going on. And the seven operators who have gone live in Maryland are offering plenty of introductory promos to help new users begin their sports betting journey in the Old Line State. In each case, the new user must set up an account though the operator’s mobile app or desktop site. Here’s what each has in store.
Maryland Sports Betting Goes Live: No. 1 FanDuel
Arguably the nation’s most popular sports betting app, FanDuel is making available to Maryland customers its standard “No Sweat First Bet” welcome promo, in which users who lose their initial wager are refunded the amount up to $1,000 in free bets that expire in 14 days.
And Maryland residents can also take advantage of a FanDuel promo that offers $200 in winnings on any initial $5 bet. Promo codes are not needed in either case.
No. 2 DraftKings
Another of the industry’s titans, DraftKings is offering new customers in Maryland $200 in free bets that will be delivered in the form of eight wagers of $25 each and are valid for seven days.
The free bet amounts cannot be withdrawn, and are not included in any winnings. No promo code is needed to take advantage of the offer.
Maryland Betting Goes Live No. 3 BetMGM
A betting app with its roots on the Las Vegas Strip, BetMGM is offering new users in Maryland a $1,000 free bet promo similar to programs it has made available in other states.
The promo code to unlock the offer is BETMDCOM. A losing initial bet will be refunded in the form of free bets up to $1,000, with those bets being delivered in increments equal to 20% of the original wager (such as five $200 bets for a $1,000 bet). The free bets must be used within seven days, and cannot be withdraw or counted toward winnings.
And No. 4 Caesars
The emperor has arrived in Maryland, and is offering free bets to new customers—although the exact amounts depend on the wagers.
Caesars will refund an initial lost wager of $20 to $100 in the form of a $100 free bet. Initial lost wagers of over $100 are refunded in the form of free bets equal to the value up to $1,500. You must use the free bets within 14 days. You can unlock the promo with the code MDBETPICS.
Maryland Betting Goes Live No. 5. PointsBet
The Australian-born sportsbook is offering new users in Maryland $200 in free bets. Those come on top its standard offer of five second-chance wagers worth up to $100 each. PointsBet will issue the $200 in free bets in four weekly installments of $50 each.
The second chance program requires users to place a fixed-odds wager each day for five days. For each bet that loses over that span, users can get up to $100 back in free bets or bet credits, up to a maximum of $500.
And No. 6. BetRivers
A sports betting app created by Rush Street Interactive, BetRivers is offering new users in Maryland a second-chance bet of up to $200. BetRivers will return an initial lost wager up to that amount as of a free bet. The offer requires a $10 minimum deposit, and use of the promo code SPORTS. You cannot redeem the free bet for cash. It expires 14 days after receipt.
Maryland Betting Goes Live No. 7. Barstool
And finally, the Penn National product is offering new users in Maryland a $1,000 risk-free bet. That means Barstool will cover a lost wager up to that amount in the form of free bets. The operator is also offering a $10 sign-up bonus for Maryland bettors. Bettors must play that amount through at least once before they can withdraw it. No promo code is necessary in either case.
