Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano have officially made history, signing a deal to fight in Madison Square Garden on April 20th as the pair become the first women to headline a fight at MSG. Serrano, signed to Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions, needed Jake Paul to play a key role in putting the fight together.
“It’s all our efforts in getting this done and it’s what needed to happen for women’s boxing to progress it forward and get women paid more,” said Paul on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani. “They’re getting paid in the seven figures, which… [has] never happened for women.”
Taylor boasts the title of undisputed lightweight champion, and Serrano is a seven-division world titlist. Serrano, a New York native, will be heading home for her impending bout, tabbed as the biggest event in women’s boxing history.
With a fight of this magnitude, New York betting apps are getting in on the fun. Sportsbooks like DraftKings and FanDuel have Taylor listed as the favorite at -130, while Serrano is -105. There are +1600 odds on the clash ending in a draw.
Jake Paul Pulling the Strings
Jake Paul first entered the boxing scene when he debuted on the undercard of a controversial YouTube event. Headlined by his older brother Logan, and popular British YouTuber KSI, also known as Olajide Olatunji. Paul defeated Olatunji’s younger brother, another YouTuber named Deji (full name Deji Olatunji) in the fifth round.
The 25-year-old has gone on to fight AnEsonGib, Nate Robinson, Ben Askren, and Tyron Woodley (twice), winning them all; he has not held his tongue either, calling out people from rapper Soulja Boy to UFC champion Jorge Masvidal. After dropping a diss track on UFC President Dana White in January and offering himself for a fight if White improved compensation and benefits for his fighters, Paul has turned his attention to bringing together the most impressive spectacle in the history of women’s boxing.
Teaming up with fellow promoter Eddie Hearn— who promoted the early YouTube fights— Paul has brought the largest-ever purse to a women’s fight. Speaking of Hearn, Paul said the following.
“He’s an innovator, he’s ahead of the curve, he’s a visionary, and that’s why he’s done so well… I would say, today is the most famous, outspoken boxing promoter.”
The last great fight in MSG came last December when Vasiliy Lomachenko beat Richard Commey via unanimous decision. Now, Taylor and Serrano are next in line to etch their names into boxing lore.
At 5-foot-5 , Katie Taylor heads into the primetime fight with a record of 20-0 (6 KO). Her last six fights have resulted in her winning by unanimous decision, most recently on December 11, 2021.
Taylor’s last appearance in Madison Square Garden came on the first of June 2019, where she was awarded a majority decision over Belgian fighter Delfine Persoon. Now, she heads back as the main event with an even more fearsome foe.
Amanda Serrano, the third-ranked pound-for-pound boxer in the world, is much more seasoned at 42-1-1 (30 KO). She has won her last 27 fights in a row, only seven of which went the distance. Both of Serrano’s last two outings ended in unanimous decisions.
There are a variety of ways to bet combat sports. The most common forms are moneyline (picking a fighter to win outright) and totals (how long a fight is expected to last).
