DraftKings at Casino Queen has announced that it has already started construction on a $10 million expansion project. The expansion will include a brand new retail sportsbook and new dining options at the property.
The DraftKings Sportsbook is located in East St. Louis, Illinois, just across the Mississippi River from downtown St. Louis. This has quickly emerged as a very popular destination in that portion of the state, and the potential for new revenue helped get this expansion project off the ground.
Plans have started to emerge for the new expansion, and the sportsbook will have lounge-style seating available to patrons. Large television screens will be featured inside of the sportsbook, and a high-definition LED odds board will also be included.
A full-service restaurant will be included in the expansion, and a food court will also be built. According to an announcement from the company, the food court will have three distinct dining options that will serve customers quickly and efficiently.
This expansion project will add nearly 30,000 square feet to the property but will focus solely on sports betting and dining. There is already a casino space of nearly 40,000 square feet with more than 1,000 slots and 29 table games.
The casino has generated more than $20.2 million in revenue during the first four months of 2021, which is a much higher total than retail sports betting. The DraftKings Sportsbook has brought in $875,000 in sports betting revenue during that same time frame.
This expansion project is expected to be completed by December 2021 and will be open to guests as soon as it is done. The DraftKings Sportsbook at Casino Queen is open year-round, and there is free parking available on-site.
Competition in St. Louis Area
St. Louis might not be located in the state of Illinois, but that metropolitan area has helped bring in impressive sports betting numbers for the Land of Lincoln. This is also an area with three solid retail options and is one reason that DraftKings has announced this expansion.
William Hill offers sports betting at the Argosy Casino Alton, and FanDuel has a retail sportsbook in nearby Collinsville. All three of these properties are within a 30-mile radius of each other.
Retail sports betting has accounted for just $134 million of the total handle since the betting industry launched, which amounts to less than 4%. The COVID-19 pandemic hurt those numbers, though, and this form of sports betting is expected to increase in 2021 and beyond.
DraftKings began offering retail sports betting at the Casino Queen in August 2021, and it has seen nearly $16 million in bets since that time. That is the third-highest total, trailing only FanDuel and BetRivers.
The President and CEO of Casino Queen Holdings, Terry Downey, had this to say about the potential of retail sports betting, “Sports wagering has greatly elevated Illinois gaming, and we are creating an environment at DraftKings at Casino Queen to capture that excitement.”
