FanDuel Strikes Deal with Mohegan in Connecticut Sports Betting Agreement

FanDuel Sportsbook is coming to Connecticut following a deal with the Mohegan tribe. Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment operate Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut. Originally, Kambi was supposed to be the technology provider for Mohegan’s sports betting, but this deal fell apart.

This opened the door for FanDuel, and the operator took advantage of the opportunity. FanDuel will be the official sports betting partner of Mohegan Sun. The company will launch a retail sportsbook at the casino, offer online sports betting, iGaming, and daily fantasy sports in the state following regulatory approval.

Connecticut sports betting is expected to launch at some point in the fall. This is an aggressive goal that lawmakers and stakeholders promoted to generate excitement in the industry. Nevertheless, if Connecticut residents can bet by the NFL playoffs, it will be a win for the state’s sports betting industry.

Kambi Deal Falls Apart

Mohegan Sun would be at a disadvantage in the state compared to Foxwoods, its primary competitor. DraftKings Sportsbook was awarded Foxwoods’ license. Kambi is a global gaming leader, but the brand is not as dominant as DraftKings to the general population.

FanDuel and Mohegan’s agreement was rumored after the deal between the tribe and Kambi was removed. Last week, the two sides agreed to part ways. This cost Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment a substantial amount of money.

The switch to FanDuel should be more prosperous in the long run. However, Mohegan owes Kambi the expected revenue from sports betting for the first five years of the previous contract. This term will end in 2024, so Mohegan will be paying Kambi for an extensive period.

Although, executives felt that this was the correct deal for the business for the future. Partnering with FanDuel was not a surprise because Mohegan and the operator have worked together since 2016 to offer daily fantasy sports.

This arrangement will now align the two industry giants, FanDuel and DraftKings, in a head-to-head competition. Mohegan has the advantage because its casino and FanDuel are superior. However, Foxwoods has a larger property than Mohegan, which could help them create a better retail sportsbook.

It’s going to be an exciting battle and one that will draw attention from the American legal betting industry. Foxwoods, run by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, signed a deal with DraftKings in December 2020.

FanDuel Sportsbook at Mohegan

Foxwoods has a larger property, but Mohegan has significant plans for its landlocked sportsbook.

Amy Howe, the president of FanDuel Group, discussed the massive plans that the company has for the retail sportsbook at Mohegan.

She said, “Mohegan Sun is an iconic casino and entertainment destination in the Northeast, and we are excited to announce our first tribal gaming partnership with one of the leading tribal operators in the United States. We have some incredible plans for the retail space at Mohegan Sun, with the potential to be the largest FanDuel Sportsbook in the United States.”

She went onto say that football season is going to be important for the company in Connecticut. FanDuel will be prepared to launch as soon as possible after they are given clearance.
