Can Caesars Repeat New York Success In Louisiana Sports Betting?

Caesars Sportsbook Louisiana

Friday Jan. 28 sees the launch of the Caesars Louisiana online sportsbook. Sports fans who want to try their hand at sports betting at Caesars can get a 100% deposit match risk free bet worth up to $1,500. Of the four brands launching in Louisiana on day one of legal online sports betting that’s the biggest welcome bonus on offer.

A fortnight ago Caesars launched in New York and in the first eight days of sports wagering it blew away the competition. The Caesars New York sportsbook generated handle of over $257 million with revenues of $22.7 million. FanDuel came in second with $200 million in handle and $14.1 million in revenue.

In New York Caesars kicked off with a welcome bonus of up to $3,000, rapidly reduced to $1,500 after the first week. Average income in Louisiana is about 15% lower than in New York State. Caesars clearly hopes that it can achieve New York level market share with a Louisiana welcome bonus only half the size. They may be right; they do have some very clever marketing people but a lot rides on the decision.

Caesars Was Slow To The Online Sports Betting Market

Almost since the new legal state regulated sports betting began in New Jersey in May 2018, Caesars has been behind the curve. FanDuel, DraftKings and BetMGM rapidly secured the bulk of the market leaving Caesars with a low single figure market share.

All changed by April 2021 when Caesars completed its acquisition of William Hill. The acquisition gave Caesars access to better technology and a thoroughly experienced team of online sports betting industry experts. Now Caesars has a sports betting platform worthy of its brand. The new Liberty platform rolled out late last year giving Caesars a foundation to challenge the market leaders.

Caesars has thrown in its US marketing expertise with sports betting welcome bonuses that are hard to resist. Ironically, when internet gambling first began William Hill was itself slow to catch on. CEO James Henderson resigned in 2016 after a weak performance in internet gaming. New CEO Ulrik Bengtsson turned the company around making it a natural fit with Caesars which jumped at the chance to buy the online part of the company.

New York was the first new market where Caesars put everything together to establish a dominant market position right from the start. It now has a playbook for new state launches and we will soon see if that playbook holds good for Louisiana.
