BetMGM, one of the leading sports betting companies in the US, has announced a multi-year agreement with Wayne Gretzky. Gretzky, “The Great One,” will serve as a brand ambassador for the company as it looks to gain a stronger foothold in the hockey betting market.
The role that Gretzky will have with the company will be strictly on the North American and hockey side of things. Gretzky is an iconic name not only in the hockey world but in the entire sports world.

He is the most accomplished NHL player of all time and holds records that will never be challenged.
Even to this day, Gretzky holds or shares 61 NHL records, a number that was much larger at the time of his retirement. He leads the league in both goals and assists, totaling 2,857 points during his 21-year career.
Gretzky recently stepped away from his role in the front office with the Edmonton Oilers. It did not take Gretzky long to land a job in the hockey world as he will join Turner Sports as a studio analyst for the upcoming season.
Turner Sports will begin a new contract with the NHL in 2021-22 as it will be the primary broadcasting partner of the league. Gretzky should help to bring some new interest and viewership to the league, and that is one area that has lacked in recent years.
In the official announcement from BetMGM, it became clear that the company is hoping to use BetMGM to gain a larger market share in the United States. A statement from Chief Revenue Officer Matt Prevost said, “As we look toward potential expansion into Canada, and elsewhere throughout the United States, Wayne will bring a unique ability to tell our brand story.”
BetMGM is a product of MGM Resorts International, and it was founded in 2018. The company offers both online sports betting and online casino gaming in select states in the US.
DraftKings, FanDuel Doing the Same
This is not the first time that a sports betting company has partnered with a sports icon, and it most certainly won’t be the last. DraftKings and FanDuel are both already using Hall of Fame athletes to help promote their brands.
DraftKings made a major splash last year when it announced that it had hired Michael Jordan as a special adviser. Jordan does not play a prominent role in the company, but he does help DraftKings make some business decisions.
Cal Ripken Jr. has also joined DraftKings as an adviser, and that has helped the company carve out a bigger path in the baseball market. Betting on MLB continues to fall behind the other professional sports in terms of handle.
FanDuel has used Charles Barkley to announce several promotions over the last month, especially big basketball boosts. Other sports betting sites have used local athletes to help promote the brand in states where sports betting is legal.
